You could avail additional storage from 100 GB up to 500 GB by availing their Upgrade packages.  You could also choose "Packrat" for unlimited undo history to safeguard your files for unintended deletion. 

Dropbox: Company Background

DropBox is a San Francisco based company.   It was founded in 2007 by two MIT students, Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi.  It was official launched at the TechCrunch50technology conference in 2008.

 Right now it is composed of a large team of engineers, designers and staff which serves most of the country around the world.

Dropbox: Business Credibility & Trustworthiness

TechCrunch, in its annual Crunchies Awards, named DropBox as the “Best Overall Startup” of 2011.  Before this, DropBox was one of the “20 Hot Silicon Valley Startups You Need to Watch” as listed by Business Insider.

It was also included as one of the best apps both for Android and iPhone in 2010. 

Currently, DropBox has no BBB rating as it is not an accredited company. 

Dropbox: Website Popularity & Google Ranking

According to Compete, DropBox had 4.87 million visitors last October 2012.  It is number one in the competitive rank, with SugarSync in the far second. 

The Alexa rank of DropBox is #124 in the US and #126 in the global rank.  DropBox is also popular in Singapore, Spain and Israel with ranks of #54, #62 and #71, respectively. 

The Google PageRank of DropBox is 7/10.

Dropbox: Social Media Presence

The DropBox Blog’s latest post is a drawing of a turkey in line with last week’s Thanksgiving celebration.  The blog is updated weekly with posts ranging from their product offerings to miscellaneous and ‘just for fun’ articles.

The official Facebook page of DropBox has 534, 692 likes while its Twitter account has 1,796,569 followers.

Dropbox: Website Security & Safety

With regards to website security, the results of the diagnostic test showed that over the past 90 days, malicious software has been found in DropBox such as 17 exploits and 5 trojans.   

Last year, a host of problems connected with website security hounded DropBox.

In April, Derek Newton explained that the authentication process of DropBox has “significant security implications”.  This was followed by the Federal Trade Commission’s complaint versus the company regarding its security and privacy policies and the actual process of the site’s upload and sharing of files.  By June, a glitch in the system made users vulnerable as any password can be used to open accounts for four hours. As a result, a class action suit was made against the company. 

Only this year, a DropBox employee’s account was hacked which resulted in a lot of users getting spam mail.    

Dropbox: Pricing & Packages

The offerings of DropBox are Free, Pro and Teams.  For the free use, a user can store up to 2GB and just have to download the program. 

For the Pro package, the offerings are:

  • 100GB for $9.99 a month or $99 a year
  • 200GB for $19.99 a month or $199 a year
  • 500GB for $49.99 a month or $499 a year

The Team package are for a minimum of 5 users priced at $795/year or $995/year.  Storage is also available for as large as a 50 user team.  

Compared with SugarSync, the 100GB storage is cheaper with DropBox.  However, with the 500GB, it is more expensive.    

Dropbox: Shipping Rates & Policies

Users for DropBox can avail of its service by just registering and downloading the program for free.  You also have the option to upgrade to a paid account for more services.

Once the program is downloaded, a user can easily upload files and have it stored at DropBox’s cloud servers.

Therefore, the company needs no shipping service as everything can be done online. 

Dropbox: Payment Methods Accepted

DropBox accepts payments through credit cards VISA, MasterCard and Amex and through PayPal. 

Once an account is made, a user’s credit card or PayPal information is also taken and the fees are automatically billed every month or year depending on the account unless it is cancelled.

The bill is deducted on the day that you create your account and every succeeding month or year after that.

Dropbox: Returns, Refunds & Exchange Policy

Users who have availed of Premium Accounts are not entitled to refunds.  An account may be cancelled and it will be effective immediately, but the months that are already paid and charged will not be refunded. 

Therefore, it is advisable that a user cancels his or her account before the billing period so that DropBox will no longer be able to charge it.
